microfinancing

Tiny loans, big impact

Microfinancing is the provision of small loans and other financial services to people who lack access to traditional banking—typically impoverished entrepreneurs in developing countries.

The loans are often modest by Western standards but sufficient to start small businesses: Microfinancing helped her buy a sewing machine and launch a tailoring business.

Also called microfinance or microlending.
