microlending

Small-scale financial assistance

Microlending is the practice of making very small loans to people who lack access to traditional banking—typically entrepreneurs in developing countries who need modest capital to start or expand small businesses.

A farmer might borrow fifty dollars for seeds, a seamstress two hundred for a sewing machine.

The loans are often facilitated by nonprofit organizations or online platforms that connect lenders directly with borrowers: She participates in microlending through Kiva.

Also called microfinance or microcredit.
