meeting one's maker
Crossing over permanently
Meeting one's maker is a euphemism for dying, based on the religious conception that after death a person's soul encounters God, who created them.
The phrase often carries a slightly old-fashioned or folksy tone and may be used with dark humor: He nearly met his maker when that truck ran the red light.
It can also appear as a solemn acknowledgment of mortality: We all meet our maker eventually.
