mechanical drive

Gears and shafts

A mechanical drive is a system that transmits power or motion through physical components—gears, belts, chains, or shafts—rather than through electrical or hydraulic means.

The term distinguishes these systems from electronic alternatives: The old lathe uses a mechanical drive.

In computing, mechanical drives (hard disk drives) store data on spinning platters, contrasted with solid-state drives that have no moving parts.
