matching contributions
Parallel employer giving
Matching contributions are funds an employer adds to an employee's retirement account based on the employee's own contributions.
A common arrangement matches fifty cents or a dollar for every dollar the employee puts in, up to a certain percentage of salary: The company offers matching contributions up to six percent.
The match is essentially free money, making it foolish to leave on the table.
The term also applies to charitable giving, where a donor pledges to match others' donations.
