match races
One-on-one sprints
Match races are head-to-head competitions between two competitors, typically in horse racing or drag racing, rather than a field of multiple contestants.
The format creates direct rivalry and often settles disputes about which competitor is superior: The two champions met in a series of match races.
Match racing also occurs in sailing, where boats compete one-on-one rather than in fleet races.
