marriage contracts
Prenuptial legal documents
Marriage contracts are legal agreements between spouses or prospective spouses that define financial rights, property division, and obligations during or after a marriage.
A prenuptial agreement is a marriage contract signed before the wedding; a postnuptial agreement is signed after.
These contracts typically specify what happens to assets, debts, and support payments if the marriage ends: Their marriage contract kept her inheritance separate from marital property.
