love language

How hearts communicate

Love language refers to the primary way a person expresses and receives affection.

The concept, popularized by a 1992 relationship guide, identifies five types: words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch, acts of service, and gift-giving.

People use the framework to understand mismatched expectations in relationships: My love language is quality time, but his is acts of service.

The term has expanded beyond romance to friendships and self-care.
