lose the plot
Go mentally astray
To lose the plot is to become confused, irrational, or unable to cope—to lose one's grip on what's happening or what one should be doing.
Originally British slang, it suggests someone has lost track of the narrative they're supposed to be following: She's completely lost the plot if she thinks that'll work.
Can also mean to lose emotional control or go slightly mad: He started screaming at the waiter—totally lost the plot.
