Consults a reference
Looks up has two main senses.
The literal one involves directing your gaze or attention upward, or searching for information in a reference source: She looks up every word she doesn't know.
The other sense, often phrased as things are looking up, means circumstances are improving after a difficult period.
To look someone up is to contact or visit them, usually after a period of no communication: Look me up if you're ever in town.
