log driving
Floating lumber downstream
Log driving is the practice of floating cut timber down rivers to sawmills or collection points, once a major method of transporting logs before railroads and trucks.
Workers called log drivers or river pigs walked on the floating logs, using pike poles to break up jams: The spring log drive brought thousands of cords downstream.
The practice shaped the culture and folklore of logging regions in North America and Scandinavia.
