lockwork
Key-operated securing mechanism
Lockwork is the internal mechanism of a lock—the arrangement of pins, tumblers, levers, and springs that must be manipulated by the correct key to open.
Locksmiths study lockwork to understand how different lock designs function and how they might be picked or bypassed.
The term also applies to similar mechanisms in firearms and clocks.
