local merchants
Nearby business owners
Local merchants are business owners who operate in a particular community or area, as distinguished from chain stores or online retailers.
The phrase often carries connotations of community investment and personalized service: Support your local merchants.
It appears frequently in discussions about keeping money in the local economy rather than sending it to distant corporations.
