living in sin

Shacking up together

Living in sin is an old-fashioned expression for cohabiting with a romantic partner without being married.

The phrase reflects traditional religious disapproval of sex outside marriage: My grandmother still thinks we're living in sin.

Now often used ironically or humorously, since unmarried cohabitation has become socially accepted in much of the Western world.
