light frost

Thin morning ice

A light frost is a thin coating of ice crystals that forms when temperatures drop just below freezing, typically between 28°F and 32°F.

Unlike a hard frost, which kills most vegetation, a light frost may only damage tender plants while hardier ones survive: The tomatoes didn't make it through the light frost, but the kale is fine.
