life line
Rescuer's thrown rope
A life line is a rope or line used to save or protect life—thrown to someone drowning, or securing a person working at dangerous heights.
By extension, a lifeline is anything essential for survival or continued operation: The highway was the town's lifeline for supplies.
In palmistry, the life line is a crease on the palm supposedly indicating longevity.
Also spelled as one word: lifeline.
