license plate readers
Automated tag cameras
License plate readers are cameras, often mounted on police vehicles or fixed structures, that automatically capture and record the license plates of passing vehicles.
The technology converts images to text and checks them against databases of wanted vehicles, stolen cars, or persons of interest.
Also called automatic license plate recognition (ALPR).
Privacy advocates raise concerns about the mass surveillance potential when location data is stored indefinitely: The city installed license plate readers at every highway entrance.
