landlocking

Cutting off seas

Landlocking is the process of surrounding territory so it loses access to the sea, or more broadly, of enclosing something so it cannot escape.

Countries can be landlocked by political boundaries; a vehicle can be landlocked by others parked around it.

The annexation landlocked the smaller nation, cutting off its port access.
