lady of the manor

Manor's female head

The lady of the manor is the female head of a manor estate, either by marriage to the lord or by holding the title in her own right.

The term evokes English feudal tradition, where the manor was the basic unit of land ownership.

Today it survives mainly as a ceremonial or purchased title: She bought herself the title of lady of the manor.
