jubilee year
Major anniversary commemoration
A jubilee year is a special anniversary year marked by celebration, forgiveness, or release.
The term originates in the Hebrew Bible, where every fiftieth year brought freedom for slaves and return of ancestral lands.
In Catholic tradition, jubilee years offer special spiritual benefits to pilgrims.
More broadly, any major anniversary—especially a fiftieth—may be called a jubilee year: The university marked its jubilee year with a gala.
