A jean button is the metal button used to fasten jeans at the waist, typically a tack button that's hammered or pressed through the denim rather than sewn.
Unlike regular buttons, it has no holes—a metal tack on the back pierces the fabric and locks into the button face: The jean button popped off when I sat down.
