intimate space

Near, private distance

Intimate space is the zone of physical proximity reserved for close relationships—the distance at which you can whisper, touch, or smell another person.

Social scientists define it as roughly eighteen inches or less from the body.

Violating someone's intimate space without permission feels threatening or intrusive: He leaned in too close, invading her intimate space.

The concept comes from proxemics, the study of how humans use physical distance in social interaction.
