intentional grounding
Purposeful throwaway penalty
Intentional grounding is a penalty in American football called when a quarterback, under pressure, throws the ball away with no realistic chance of completion to avoid being sacked.
The quarterback must be outside the tackle box or throw the ball past the line of scrimmage to legally throw the ball away.
The referee called intentional grounding when he threw it into the dirt.
