informed refusal
Educated patient decline
Informed refusal is a patient's decision to decline a medical treatment or procedure after being told about its risks, benefits, and alternatives.
It's the counterpart to informed consent—the same information exchange, but ending in no rather than yes.
Healthcare providers document informed refusals to show the patient understood what they were turning down: She signed an informed refusal for the recommended surgery.
