Label-free musical group
An indie band is a rock group operating outside major record labels, typically releasing music through independent labels or self-distribution.
The term originated as shorthand for "independent" but has evolved to describe a particular aesthetic—lo-fi production, artistic autonomy, and alternative sensibilities—regardless of actual label affiliation: They sound like an indie band even though they're signed to Universal.
