index fund
Passive investment vehicle
An index fund is an investment fund designed to match the performance of a market index like the S&P 500, rather than trying to beat it through active stock selection.
Index funds buy the same securities in the same proportions as their target index, offering broad market exposure with lower fees than actively managed funds: Most of my retirement savings are in index funds.
