in-law unit

Secondary dwelling space

An in-law unit is a small secondary dwelling on a property with a main house, typically used to house relatives—especially aging parents.

The term reflects the common arrangement of keeping in-laws close but with some independence.

Also called a granny flat, accessory dwelling unit, or mother-in-law suite: They converted the garage into an in-law unit.
