hot house
Glass-walled growing space
A hothouse is a heated greenhouse for growing plants that need warmth—tropical species or vegetables out of season.
The term extends to any environment of forced or accelerated development: a hothouse of artistic talent, hothouse flowers (plants or people too delicate for harsh conditions).
As an adjective, hothouse suggests cultivation under artificial, protected conditions: hothouse tomatoes, a hothouse atmosphere.
