hospitalists
Hospital-based medical specialists
Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in caring for patients during hospital stays.
Unlike primary care doctors who see patients in offices and occasionally visit them in hospitals, hospitalists work exclusively within hospitals, managing admissions, coordinating care, and handling discharges.
The role emerged in the 1990s as hospitals sought doctors with dedicated in-house expertise: The hospitalist took over my father's care when he was admitted for pneumonia.
