Edge realignment tool
A honing rod is a tool for maintaining knife edges between sharpenings.
Unlike sharpening stones that remove metal to create a new edge, a honing rod realigns the existing edge that has bent or folded during use: Give the blade a few strokes on the honing rod before slicing.
Also called a sharpening steel, though the terms reflect different functions.
