holy mother

Holy mother is an exclamation of surprise, awe, or alarm, invoking the Virgin Mary: Holy mother, did you see that catch?

The phrase often appears in fuller forms like holy mother of God or the more irreverent holy mother of pearl.

It falls between mild and moderate on the spectrum of religious oaths—stronger than goodness but softer than taking God's name directly.
