historical tragedy
Calamity from history
A historical tragedy is a dramatic work—typically a play or film—depicting the downfall of real figures from history, often rulers or other prominent people whose fates were shaped by political forces, moral failings, or circumstances beyond their control.
Shakespeare's plays about English kings exemplify the genre.
The term also applies more broadly to actual catastrophic events from the past: The sinking of the Titanic remains one of history's greatest tragedies.
