historic rivalry
Storied opposing tradition
A historic rivalry is a long-standing competition between two parties—teams, nations, institutions, or individuals—that has developed significance over time through repeated contests and accumulated grievances.
The rivalry becomes part of each side's identity: The historic rivalry between Oxford and Cambridge dates back centuries.
Sports rivalries often carry the label: Yankees-Red Sox is baseball's most historic rivalry.
