hieroglyphic writing
Ancient pictorial script
Hieroglyphic writing is the ancient Egyptian system of writing using pictorial symbols—stylized images of animals, objects, and abstract shapes that represent sounds, words, or concepts.
The term extends to any pictographic writing system, such as Mayan hieroglyphs.
Figuratively, hieroglyphic describes anything resembling such symbols or difficult to decipher: His handwriting was practically hieroglyphic.
