heavy drapes
Weighty window coverings
Heavy drapes are thick, weighty curtains that block light and insulate against drafts.
The phrase emphasizes the substantial fabric—velvet, brocade, or lined material—as opposed to sheer or lightweight window coverings: The heavy drapes kept the bedroom dark until noon.
They suggest formal or traditional décor, and sometimes a desire for privacy or seclusion.
