hawkmoths

Swift nocturnal fliers

Hawkmoths are large, heavy-bodied moths with narrow wings and a rapid, hovering flight that resembles a hummingbird's.

Many species have long tongues for drinking nectar from deep flowers while hovering in place.

The name comes from their swift, darting flight.

Also called sphinx moths.
