hang a shingle
Start professional business
To hang a shingle is to open a professional practice, especially as a doctor, lawyer, or other independent practitioner.
The phrase evokes the traditional sign hung outside an office announcing one's services: After law school, she hung a shingle in her hometown.
It suggests going into business for oneself rather than joining an established firm.
