habeas

Demand the body

Habeas is the first word of *habeas corpus*, a legal writ requiring authorities to bring a detained person before a court.

In casual legal shorthand, habeas often stands alone for the full phrase: The defense filed a habeas petition, We're going to habeas him out of there.

The Latin means "you shall have the body."
