Gypsy cabs are unlicensed taxis operating outside official regulation—vehicles that pick up street hails without medallions or permits.
The term emerged in American cities where licensed cabs were scarce or avoided certain neighborhoods: Gypsy cabs were the only way to get a ride in that part of town.
Now often replaced by "informal taxi" to avoid the ethnic slur.
