high-flyer

Rising star type

A high-flyer is someone ambitious and successful, especially in business or academics—a person whose career trajectory seems to soar above others: She's a high-flyer destined for the executive suite.

The term can also refer to a bird that flies at great altitudes, or historically, a stock that rises rapidly in value.

Also spelled high-flier.
