ground swells
Long ocean waves
Ground swells are long, deep ocean waves caused by distant storms or seismic activity, rolling steadily toward shore without the choppy surface disturbance of local wind.
Figuratively, a groundswell is a surge of public sentiment or grassroots momentum building beneath the surface: a groundswell of support for the candidate.
The singular groundswell is more common than the plural.
