grey whales

Barnacled ocean giants

Grey whales, also spelled gray whales, are large baleen whales known for their mottled grey coloring and barnacle-encrusted skin.

They migrate annually along the Pacific coast between Arctic feeding grounds and warm breeding lagoons in Baja California, making one of the longest migrations of any mammal.

Unlike most whales, grey whales are bottom feeders, scooping sediment to filter out small crustaceans.

We spotted grey whales breaching during their spring migration.
