green mile
Condemned prisoner's path
The green mile is the corridor leading to an execution chamber, especially in a prison with a death row.
The phrase comes from the green linoleum flooring in some such corridors.
It gained wide recognition from Stephen King's 1996 novel and its 1999 film adaptation.
By extension, any final walk or journey toward an inevitable, dreaded outcome: It felt like the green mile walking into that meeting.
