great flood
Catastrophic water disaster
A great flood is a catastrophic deluge that submerges vast areas of land.
The term often refers to the biblical flood survived by Noah, or similar flood narratives found across many world cultures: The great flood appears in Mesopotamian, Greek, and Hindu mythology.
More generally, any massive inundation may be called a great flood: The great flood of 1927 displaced hundreds of thousands along the Mississippi.
