great escape

Dramatic prison break

A great escape is a dramatic flight from confinement or danger, especially one requiring ingenuity or daring.

The phrase often alludes to famous prison breaks or the 1963 film depicting Allied POWs tunneling out of a German camp.

More loosely, it describes any dramatic exit from an unpleasant situation: The weekend cabin was our great escape from city life.
