government oversight
State agency supervision
Government oversight is the monitoring of government agencies, officials, or programs by other bodies—typically legislative committees, inspectors general, or independent watchdogs.
The purpose is accountability: ensuring public funds are spent properly, laws are followed, and power isn't abused.
The committee held hearings as part of its oversight of the intelligence community.
Oversight in this sense means watchful supervision, distinct from the other meaning of oversight as an inadvertent omission.
