A goldbeater is a craftsman who hammers gold into extremely thin sheets called gold leaf.
The process involves placing gold between layers of membrane (traditionally ox intestine, called goldbeater's skin) and beating it repeatedly until it becomes translucent.
Gold leaf produced this way is used for gilding frames, domes, lettering, and decorative arts.
