Gobstoppers are large, hard, round candies designed to be sucked rather than chewed, changing colors and flavors as layers dissolve.
The name comes from British slang where "gob" means mouth—a gobstopper literally stops up your mouth.
Also called jawbreakers in American English: The gobstopper lasted the whole car ride.
