Goaltended is the past tense of goaltend, a basketball violation where a player interferes with a shot while it's descending toward the basket or on the rim.
When a shot is goaltended, the offensive team is awarded the points: The ref called it—he goaltended that layup.
The term extends from goaltending in hockey, where blocking shots is legal and desirable.
