gas-lighting

Making someone doubt reality

Gas-lighting is a form of psychological manipulation where someone makes another person question their own perceptions, memories, or sanity.

The manipulator denies events happened, insists the victim is imagining things, or twists facts until the victim doubts their own judgment: He kept gas-lighting her about the affair until she thought she was crazy.

From the 1944 film *Gaslight*, where a husband dims the gas lights while denying anything has changed.
